What are the Do’s and Don’ts after Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extraction forms the basis of numerous dental treatment procedures. The process of tooth extraction involves the complete removal of one or more teeth from the mouth. Typically, dentists or oral surgeons perform tooth extractions. They also provide postoperative instructions that must be followed by the patient for quick recovery and relief from a lot of pain.

Below are some Do’s and don’ts after tooth extraction that are often suggested to patients at Wonder Smile, the popular dental clinic in Pimpri Chinchwad.

Do’s after Tooth Extraction

Take prescribed medicines

Taking medicines reduces the pain and the swelling. Painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs should be taken after the tooth extraction procedure.

Use ice packs

Applying the affected area with an ice bag after the extraction keeps down swelling. The ice pack should be applied on alternate 15 minutes for one to two hours.

Use cotton gauze

Taking a gauze pad for at least 45 minutes after extraction is often advised by the dentist. The gauze put pressure over the wound and help to stop the bleeding.

Warm Saline rinses

Warm saline rinses help maintain the hygiene of the extracted area as it is not possible to brush the socket. Salt is added to make the solution isotonic, that is, less irritating to the socket.

Brush gently

Brush your teeth very gently and carefully. Also, avoid brushing around the extraction area. Brushing roughly might dislodge the blood clot and cause complications and pain.

Take sufficient rest

The patients are advised to take rest for a day or two, with their head elevated. Don’t do exercise or too much activity for at least 24 hours. Also, when lying down, prop your head with pillows, as lying flat may prolong bleeding.

Don’ts after Tooth Extraction

Given below are the list of don’ts provided by our dentist in Pimpri Chinchwad:

Don’t eat or drink immediately

While there is still numbness in the mouth, it is best not to eat hard food. In some cases, tooth extraction exposes the jawbone tissue. A blood clot is naturally formed on it, which can be damaged by rough and crunchy food. Eat only soft food such as soup, yogurt, pudding, etc.

Avoid smoking

The nicotine present in the cigarettes constricts blood vessels and inhibits the healing process. In addition, the chemical can dislodge the blood clot and increase the risk of developing a dry socket.

Don’t take aspirin

The oral surgeons advise not to take aspirin for two weeks before the extraction. NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can result in excessive postoperative bleeding.

Don’t poke into the gap created

Having a gap feels awkward in the initial days after the tooth extraction. However, avoid poking the area with the tongue or a toothpick as it can delay the healing and cause bleeding.

Don’t use a straw

Sucking from a straw can also dislodge the blood clot, which won’t form again if it’s damaged once. The other side effect it can produce is the dry socket.
