The wisdom tooth isn’t really for wisdom!
When a wisdom tooth doesn’t find enough space to grow, it ends up in painful episodes with infection and other dental problems. You may have to remove it through a surgical process in such cases.
Wisdom teeth are adult teeth that appear on the top and bottom back corners of the jaws. Our ancestors once used them to chew, tear or break nuts and raw meat. Not to mention, over time, these molar teeth became obsolete.
It is said that a wisdom tooth extraction at a younger age is much easier and less painful. However, you seldom know your body! Right?!! No one can predict when the need arises or the problems with the tooth start. So, when it calls for some attention, you should immediately book an appointment with your Dentist.
· Severe pain
· Food particles getting trapped around the tooth
· Periodontal disease
· Teeth that are nearby the wisdom tooth start getting infected too
· Chances of a cyst getting formed
· Tooth decay
Generally, it is difficult to predict what severities one may face with a wisdom tooth. It has been observed that younger adults complain lesser about this. But older adults may garner tooth disease even if their wisdom tooth is problem-free.
Nevertheless, it is always advisable to seek treatment even if you face the littlest of symptoms regarding your wisdom tooth. The more you stretch it, the bigger the issue may become. The surgery might get even more complicated, and also the after-surgery recovery.
A wisdom tooth extraction surgery may happen in the clinic itself. First, your surgeon may anesthetize your gums before getting started with the procedure. Then, in case your tooth is way too impacted, he/she may ask you to get sedation so that you are a bit more at ease.
Will I be able to drive home alone after the surgery? Should I avoid eating or drinking a few hours before the surgery? Whether Should I continue with my prescription drugs till the surgery happens? Should I avoid any OTC drugs? What about my existing illness and my health history?
Many such questions may arise in your mind regarding the process. Do not hesitate. Ask your surgeon and clear the doubts off your mind.
The surgeon may follow either of the following ways so that you experience the least pain during your wisdom teeth surgery:
Local Anaesthesia: The surgeon might put or more injections in the gums around the extraction area. This will make your gums go numb, and you may lose sensation for some time. You may lightly feel the tugging or pulling actions but no pain as such.
Sedation: In this process, the surgeon looks at the severity of your tooth condition. According to it, he may suggest sedation, i.e. anesthesia through IV in your arms along with local anesthesia in your gums. You may doze off to sleep and directly wake up after the entire process. You may start feeling your gums slowly after you wake up.
General Anaesthesia: In cases where there are several issues in a patient’s health history, he is made to inhale a sort of gas through the nose. Sometimes, sedation through IV in arms and local anesthesia is given together to go through minimum pain. The patient immediately goes off to sleep and is not in his senses. He gradually wakes up after the surgery is done.
In general, wisdom teeth surgery involves the following steps:
You may experience a bit of swelling and bleeding on the first day. That is normal. You may be able to manage the pain with some pain killers and over-the-counter medications that your surgeon prescribes. You can also opt for an ice pack. Placing the ice-pack on the affected side of your face allows you to relax and reduce the swelling to a great extend. However, you should not miss out on calling your doctor if you observe sudden bleeding or sharp pain.
After going through a long and bearably painful process, you obviously would not want to disrupt the stitches or the affected area. You, of course, would not want to get the process redone, right?!! Thus, as a precaution, you must take care of your food habits for a couple of days. Try avoiding food items that might disturb the extracted tooth site. Food that might get wedged or harm the sensitive area should be ignored.

Wisdom Teeth Removal surgery isn’t a very uncommon process. However, most people get it done without any complications or post-surgery hitches. You can resume your daily life routine right from the next day of the extraction process. Wisdom tooth extraction recovery typically happens within three days of the surgery or sometimes up to 1 week at the max.
Understandably, any type of surgery tends to put the deceased in panic mode. But remember, staying calm, sorted, and prepared before and after the procedure really pays off.
